The District Court in Dharwad was established over 150 years ago. The term “Dharwad” signifies a place of repose during a long journey or a small settlement. For centuries, Dharwad has served as a passage between the Malenaadu (western mountains) and the Bayalu seeme (plains), offering respite to travelers. Its name is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘dwarawata’, with ‘dwara’ meaning “door” and ‘wata’ or ‘wada’ meaning “town”. Initially, it held jurisdiction over the Gadag & Haveri Districts, encompassing a total of 17 talukas. However, with the establishment of District Courts in Gadag on 30 September 2000 & in Haveri on 12 October 2001, only 5 talukas, namely Dharwad, Hubli, Kalghatagi, Kundagol & Navalgund, remained under the jurisdiction of Dharwad District.
Dharwad district is situated in the western sector of the northern half of Karnataka State. It shares its borders with Belagavi District to the North, Gadag District to the East, Haveri District to the South, and Uttarakannada (Karwar) District to the West. All these surrounding districts are part of Karnataka State. Talukas under Dharwad District include Dharwad, Hubballi, Kundgol, Navalgund, and Kalghatagi.
